Sorry if this sounds rude, but the help says it all. It is not automatic that everyone wants to see the date as xx/xx/xx. Someone might want to see xx.xx.xx, or xx,xx,xx or xx xx xx As the help text says, this lets you choose what separator to use. In the above 3 cases, the character to use in this option would be . , and &. The & is necessary because leaving the option blank gives a /.
