Subject: RE: Create a stream file in RPG?
From the wonderful AS/400 Information Center that you can't scan or search:
I.F.S. Introduction
APIs
The APIs that perform operations on integrated file system directories and
stream files are in the form of C language functions. You have a choice of
two sets of functions, either of which you can use in programs that are
created using Integrated Language Environment (ILE) C/400:
* Integrated file system C functions that are included in OS/400.
* C functions provided by the ILE C/400 licensed program.
So I took that to mean that I couldn't use them in RPG-IV.
Yes? No? Do you have any examples? I think I need to use QHFWRTSF, as well
as the APIs to open & close the stream file. Or should I first pursue
writing to a flatfile, then using CPYTOSTMF?
Oh, and if by chance I _can_ use the IFS stream file APIs, where the @#$%
can I find the documentation for them?

Check out the IFS APIs. This is where you will find all your stream file
handling.

Subject: Create a stream file in RPG?
I am trying to determine how to output to a stream file in RPG IV.
Essentially, I am trying to create an .RTF document file on the 400, so that
I can open it in Wordpad, or even MS Word.
I am trying to do a homegrown green-screen documentation utility so that I
can include 5250 screen prints with all the highlighting & underscores in a
Word document. Since Word understands RTF, and RTF is relatively simple to
build and can handle the bold and underlining attributes, I figured the
programming would be pretty easy. But it seems that I need to output to a
stream file.
I searched for "stream file" and did not find any reference in the ILE-RPG
manuals. Will I just have to output to a regular flatfile with, say, a
record length of 500, output one record per print line and use CPYTOSTMF?
Answer to the inevitable question: Because I am a travelling contractor and
this is doable.
The inevitable question: Why not just buy a package to do this?
TIA,
