Just to be sure there's no misunderstanding here, be aware there's
a difference between RPGIV and ILE RPG. ILE is the "Integrated
Language Environment" which means that parts of an application
*may* be written in different ILE compatible languages such as ILE
C, ILE Cobol, etc. RPGIV is a ILE compatible language, but it does
*not* necessarily have to be used in the ILE environment.

That being said, there are HUGE advantages to switching to RPGIV.
Many limitations have been removed, such as field names longer than
six characters, larger field sizes and new variable types, support
for free format statements (eval, if, etc.), built-in-functions,
improved string support, sub-procedures and procedure prototyping.
The list goes on an on.

My suggestion would be to tackle RPGIV first, learn the new
capabilities and get comfortable with that before jumping into ILE.
ILE requires a change in the way you think about coding. RPGIV will
co-exist with your RPG/400 code quite happily, and in my opinion
gives the programmer the most bang for the buck.

Hi Everyone,

It has been noticed that more RPG programmer are switching over to ILE. I
would like to know what are the benefits of using RPG/ILE since I am also
involved in the programming tasks from time to time.

Response from experienced of both programming languages is appreciated.

Best Regard.

Amir
