Depends on how sure you'll be receiving valid numeric characters, where the sign will be, and whether or not there'll be thousands separators. If you're absolutely sure it will always be a positive number with no sign character and no separators, you're home free. Trim the character field and move the result of the trim to a numeric. If you have to deal with signs and separators and uncertainty about the values of the individual characters, you'll need to write your own code to deal with all of the conditions you expect to see. Check the archives. Earlier this year there was a pretty extensive thread on this sort of conversion with several different coding approaches posted. This sort of thing isn't hard, it just involves careful thinking about the exceptions you'll encounter and how you want to deal with them. It's definitely a write it once and use it over and over situation. > -----Original Message----- > From: Kevin Blankenship [mailto:kblanken1@yahoo.com] > Sent: Sunday, November 26, 2000 11:00 AM > To: RPG400-L@midrange.com > Subject: Character to Numeric > > > I am receiving a character field from another system > that will contain a number with decimal.
