RE: V4R4 and Fax support

Bill,
A number of years ago we used to fax using a bunch of PCs with fax cards.
These worked by emulating both a 5250 terminal and an AS/400 printer
attached to an outq. If a spool file was placed on the outq then, instead of
printing it, the PC would fax it. The fax number had to be embedded in the
report using a syntax that the PC stripped before faxing.

Then we got Fax/400. Because our fax process was triggered by a spool file
appearing on an outq we were able to modify the process so that it then
interfaced with Fax/400 instead of the PC devices. Here is a potential
solution.

1. Assign an outq for faxing anything that appears on it, and attach a data
queue to it.
2. Create a server job that waits on the data queue and reads the spool file
attributes that are automatically stored in the data queue entry.
3. An existing pgm generates a spool file that is to faxed. At this point
let's assume you have determined the fax number. 
4. Then call a new pgm that you pass the fax number along with the spool
file attributes spoolname/jobno/user/jobname and spool number. This pgm
writes this info to a new fax register file that you have created using the
spool file attributes as a unique key.
5. Then move the spool file to the outq for faxing.
6. The server job will then fire and extract the spool file attributes. It
can then access the fax number using the unique key on the fax register
file.
7. The server job now has the essential information required to call the
Fax/400 API to send the spool file as a fax.
8. Then move the spool file to some trash outq.
9. Fax/400 can be configured to send responses to a data queue that you can
monitor. You can integrate this with your fax register file to create your
own tracking system. If you need to resend a fax, just move it from the
trash outq to your faxing outq.

I believe I heard that fax support was included as part of OS/400.  If so,
I'm looking for anyone with experience utilizing it with        RPG
generated reports.  We are on V4R4 at this time.
