Dare,

AFAIK you cannot update a substring through SQL (although RPG does it; it
may be that that causes confusion).  So you should use:

update bpcsusrf/gld77i set ftpdta = substr(ftpdta,1,13) concat '7' concat
substr(ftpdta, 15, xxx)  where ftpdta like 'ga%'

(replace xxx with the length of ftpdta minus 14).
