well the whole purpose of this thing is to sort the data into columns on a
subfile/print each of the formatxx fields at the top level combines the
data below it into a total amount. Part of the problem is after this ds is
filled out the detail files are read and the ds is used to decide which
column to put the values in for the print/display... Would using pointers
still work with this scenario?

I'm not quite sure of all the design specs, but I think that if you
made the separate sub data structures as unique data structures and
mapped them using pointers it would be easier to read, and follow,
the code.
But then, I like using pointers for this kind of thing, so take it
with a grain of salt.
