I do this all the time:
D/if defined(need_sqlca)
D/copy #cb_sqlca
D/endif
to copy in the sqlca when using Code/400's verifier on an sqlrpgle member.
(#cb_sqlca contains the sqlca data structure)
This sounds like what you're trying to do.
