What gets done with the *'s once they are found has yet to be decided. The
reason I need to find them all is because the * (or any special character)
can be used as a delimiter when sending files electronically. Any field
containing an * will cause whatever program is processing the data to think
it's the end of a field when it really isn't. Using a different delimiter
has been discussed, but whatever we decide to use, we have to scan for that
character in all our files.
Keep the ideas coming. I'm willing to try just about anything.

Not sure exactly what you are wanting to do with it but I tried
using PDM's
option 25=Find string on a database file and it works by displaying
the data
in the file containing the * with the found data highlighted. You
can then
press F16 to "find" other occurrences in the file which will also be
highlighted.
Selecting option 25 and then pressing F13 while displaying only
files would
at a minimum give you the files that contain the * data.
If you're thinking many of the files have the * this may not help at
all.
More details on what you're planning on doing when you find the data
would
help.

Subject: process a list of files
I've been stumbling over this for weeks and have decided to contact
the
experts.
I have a long list of files (over 500) that I need to process. I
need to
search every character field in every file for the '*' character. I
would
like to have one RPG program that will scan the records of the files
for the
character. But since nearly every file has a different layout, I
have no
idea how to accomplish this. Any ideas are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Adam Ray
