And your simple test works quite well.
However if I change one line to:
     D EightDigits     S                   like(Digit8Date) inz(99999999)
Then the result is:
99011702

D*mn the archaic move!  Please give is a free format version to convert
dates to numerics!

My workaround is to clear the field prior to the move.

The result will be 011702 - if your coding looks like:

D WorkDate        S               D   Datfmt(*ISO) INZ(*JOB)
D EightDigits     S                   like(Digit8Date)
D Digit8Date      S              8S 0

C     *MDY          Move      WorkDate      EightDigits

 /Free

   Dsply EightDigits '*REQUESTER';
   *InLR = *On;

 /End-Free

Note that Digit8Date is standalone with no CONST keyword.
