They're ALL variable length records, or to put a finer point on it, there
are no records.  It's all just one character following another.  How your
program needs to interpret those as 'records' is really determined by the
application that created the file.  If it is like a text file, where one
sentence is short and the next is long, perhaps the sentences (records) are
terminated with a carriage return.  If that were the case, I would read one
character at a time until I found the delimiter.
