First, there are three flavors of RPG running on the iSeries.
- System/36 RPG. Very little new being done in there. I wouldn't start
studying that.
- RPG/400. Most existing code is written in this. There is still a lot
of new development going on in here. Many canned packages are written in
this.
- ILE RPG. This is where new development should be going.
Some people will get into a p!ssing contest over how I named the three
types. I just use the titles from the IBM manuals for the languages.
There are a number of books written on these subjects. If you want to
take advantage of the latest features I'd be a little wary of authors that
are so upset with IBM over how they implemented new features that they
won't use them - like free format RPG. For a list of books you may wish

There are a number of colleges teaching RPG throughout the world. Don't
