If your database records have a fixed length of say 256 bytes, write
blocks of 100 records to your tape file.

Use the OVRTAPF command to reflect this ....

OVRTAPF FILE(QTAPE) DEV(TAP01) RCDLEN(256) BLKLEN(25600)RCDBLKFMT(*FB)
SECURE(*YES)

In your RPG program specify the file QTAPE as a fixed lentgh file

FQATPE   IF  F     256            SEQ

In every I/O map the 256 bytes to an external data structure that reflects
the
record of the database file you are interested in populating and that is
all
