You would probably need two data structures to accomplish this, assuming
it's possible to overlay a date field on a character field.  The first would
contain the eight digit date and subfields for year, month, and day.  The
second would contain subfields for year, month, and day in addition to
fields for the "-" character.

I'm reasonably certain what you want cannot be accomplished using a single
data structure.  Besides, the MOVE method is, to me anyway, easier to
understand since almost everything one needs to know is contained in a
single statement.

No I don't have to use a data structure, I was just trying to get a DS to do
the work and eliminate all of the moves...
i.e.

D Date_Field                                   D
Overlay(Character_Date) ??????????(or something like this)
