I got an error when I did the CHGSPLF before closing the file. I don't
remeber exactly what error it was, but I thing it was something like 'cannot
change the splfile while in process'.

You could try the CHGSPLF before closing the spool file.  What is the
override scope on your OVRPRTF, may be why it isn't affecting it.  I would
do the OVRPRTF file directly from my RPG program using either the 'system'
call or QCMDEXC.
