We are doing that with a printer sold by Ithaca Periferals.  It is a narrow
printer that uses cash register tape and is attached to a terminal via a
parallel port and configures as a system printer.  A cash drawer can
be attached to a port on the printer and opened by "printing" a
special character string.  Features like form feed and cut paper are
controlled the same way.  HTH
