You're correct, of course.  I missed the "right" part of the question.

How about this then:
EVAL NewVariable =
     %SUBST(%TRIM(MYVAR):%LEN(%TRIM(MYVAR)) - 9:10)

As long as you always have at least ten non-blank characters, this should
work.

I haven't tested it, though...
