Hans,
I understand what you are doing. And I might have understood your example
faster with multiple levels after the tag. However my personal opinion is
that Jeff's method is more readable. (At least with a single level
total).

You can code your total calcs using free-form calcs. The only catch
is that you need to code a fixed-form calc to begin your total
calcs. The way I'd code the above would be:
/END-FREE
CL0 total_calcs TAG
/FREE
if *inlr;
Exsr EOJRtn;
endif;
/END-FREE
