Although an RPG II or III (you have my sympathy by the way ;-) program
cannot _use_ a prototype, it can be defined by one so that when called from
any flavor of RPG IV the parameters get checked.

Yup - but protos are still the right answer - except where you can't use
them (i.e. ancient versions of RPG)
