                I need to write a program that reads data into memory, as
this data is
                accessed many 10,000's of times a day and so I am trying to
avoiding
                constant access of the data on disk. There is no fixed limit
on the number
                of records in the file, but probably would be a maximum of
100.

                I thought of using an array and lookup op. code on the key
of the file.  Is
                there any better ways of achieving my desired result?

                Also, would managing the memory allocation for the array
make a significant
                difference to performance?

Hi Robin! Have you tried a user index? Gary Guthrie wrote an excellent
series of articles about them in iSeries News starting in September, 1999.
He gave some great sample code, as well. I've never used them as a
replacement for a database file (and Gary gives good advice about their
proper use and place in an application) but I have used them for temporary
storage, especially for batch applications.
