Accessing another database from RPG via SQL

Hi All

I have a customer who has some programs that lookup a file via DDM to do 
some validation of things like Account number, gl code, etc etc and 
occasionally return data like account name. Now the remote AS/400 database 
is being migrated to db/2 running on a pSeries.

What do I have to do to achieve the same effect as the DDM files ?

I have read numerous posts regarding using SQL to access remote databases 
but am still a little unclear on how- I can:

- construct a simple SQL statement that returns a field or fields to 
replace what used to be a fairly simple chain
- what the setup steps are for accessing a remote database using this method

Any step by step plans, hints, code snippets or printers to manuals are 
welcome.
