Yep, Booth said it wrong :)
When you end up with 12, and add 1, you get the 13th element, which is
'C'. And that's good, because the decimal number 12 is represented as C
in hex.
I don't know why Booth didn't just use cvthc()? I guess maybe he just
wanted to explain the algorithm?
At any rate, it's all moot, because the poster wasn't looking for a hex
dump of the variable, he just used the term "hex data" to refer to data
that's not human-readable.
