My back ground with AS/SET as a product came before BPCS. And had a few members in the group I was in go to Chicago to help make that happen. Believe me I do not think the RPG generated was the greatest but then again it is a Case tool. Those move fields to work fields and back subroutines. Yuk. Bill, I changed the subject :-) I've never met anyone in that boat. However I did hear of a COBOL shop that moved to an iSeries that bought AS/SET to smooth out the RPG learning curve. Being a former board member of the AS/SET Users Group, I can tell you that there were shops using AS/SET that never purchased BPCS. I don't use AS/SET anymore, but in it's day I think developers would have been better off if they had generated the source into QTEMP and never looked at it. By concentrating on the finished product is where it had it's benefit. Looking at the source didn't allow you to see the forest through the trees. Rob have you ever met AS/SET BPCS person that claimed you did not need to now any RPG. That boss had SEVERAL years to start learning ILE. Based on that I assume that shop will never have any Java, Visual Basic or any other languages that the manager didn't learn while in college. But, I've seen people react like this. For example we have a very simple batch SQL program that was originally written by a person who 'left' in May of 2000. All of a sudden, after some ptf's, etc, it generates some SQL errors. After I've opened up a pmr with IBM that manager decides to rewrite the program from scratch, (granted, it was developed in AS/SET.) He's gone and suddenly she has a non-useful application and bosses breathing down her neck. In a perfect world all IT shops would have 20% or more of programmer time budgeted for training. But alas... it will never happen. --------------------------------------------------------- Booth Martin http://www.MartinVT.com Booth@xxxxxxxxxxxx --------------------------------------------------------- -------Original Message------- From: RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries Date: Thursday, October 23, 2003 5:26:28 PM To: RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries Subject: RE: Benefits of Sub-procedures ..... Another horror story I have heard in the past year - another colleague of mine had written a stand-alone application completely in RPGIV. He even designed his database with 10-character field names and date and time fields. He used sub-procedures. Then he cut his hand with a band-saw and was out on medical leave for 2 1/2 months. Needless to say, one of his managers had to make a change to his app. She didn't understand any of it, so, she re-wrote the entire thing in RPG/400. When he came back off of medical leave, he was told he could not use any RPGIV at all, ....
