John, >>2000 characters per entry would drive me mad... Yes it would, but then I don't know you. :) I think my idea of multiple user spaces is the best solution. I truly do wish IBM would "fix" this limitation. I thought Ron Fess & Co. had done that back in V3R1 days, but apparently they missed this one. :( Bob Cozzi Cozzi Consulting www.rpgiv.com -----Original Message----- From: rpg400-l-bounces+cozzi=rpgiv.com@xxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:rpg400-l-bounces+cozzi=rpgiv.com@xxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of John Brandt Sr. Sent: Monday, November 03, 2003 2:59 PM To: 'RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries' Subject: RE: User Space or Data Queue or PF or IFS I see that you are correct, Bob, although the 4.5 documentation says that they can be up to 1 GIG in size. I would think that 2000 characters per entry would drive me mad breaking up and reassembling data. This is what a message file is under the covers. The index entries are limited to 2000 bytes each, and of course, just like most objects, user indexes have an associated space. That associated space is also limited to 16MB since a User space is an exposed space object they are identical under the covers. So unless you want to break up your data into 2000 byte chunks, the user space won't help. What would help, and what is sorely need (and long over due in my view) is a teraspace user index. Sorry if this has already been stated. There is something that I just heard about called a User Index that supposedly holds up to a Terabyte of data. The IBM person said it operated similar to a User space except you could index the entries. You might want to check that out even though you would be in some serious do-do if you ever got something that big;-) Aaron Bartell -----Original Message----- From: John Brandt Sr. [mailto:pgmr@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx] Sent: Monday, November 03, 2003 2:18 PM To: 'RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries' Subject: RE: User Space or Data Queue or PF or IFS Yes, but I don't know that 2 GB will hold what they are requesting.
