Although I'd strongly suggest that you stay away from using the vertical 
bars for concatenation, especially if multilingual support may be on your 
horizon.

    case 
     when clast=0 then 
       date('0001-01-01') 
     else 
       date( 
        substring(char(clast),1,4) concat '-' concat
        substring(char(clast),5,2) concat '-' concat
        substring(char(clast),7,2)) 
    end 
    as Date_Formatted, 
    clast 
from dhtheif/rcm 

DATE_FORMATTED  Last 
                Transaction
                Date

Sounds like you're a BPCS user where all of the dates are stored as 
numbers.
You have to jump through hoops. 

Something like.

select date(substring(Char(LHDATE),1,4) || '-' ||
substring(Char(LHDATE),5,2) || '-' || substring(Char(LHDATE),7,2)) as
Date_Formatted
 from "PRDBPCS"."PRODF"."GLH" T1
