In fact, if you try to use it without assigning a pointer, chances are you'll be looking at an invalid address and will get an MCH3601 or something similar. Now on to the question I asked <grin>. I'm trying to make sure that, for whatever bizarre reason, the compiler isn't allocating a data structure anyway. Common sense says it won't, but common sense can't always be trusted. Joe
