I knew about that initialization, but you're right, I should have included
that. Running through the loop a second time would not be a good thing
otherwise.
+= is a good thing to remember. Much like the optional factor 1 in the
ADD op code.

Actually, no. Try this:
total = 0; // Don't forget this important step!
for x = 1 to %elem(store);
total = total + store(x).early;
endfor;
And if you're on V5R2, you could code:
total = 0;
for x = 1 to %elem(store);
total += store(x).early;
endfor;
