Tried a really long shot, to no avail.
     D MyNull          s                   like(EmailAddress) 
based(pMyNull)
     D pMyNull         s               *

       reset AtSignPos;
       reset BlankBefore;
       reset BlankAfter;
       reset EmailAddress;
       AtSignPos=%scan('@' : SourceString : 1);
       Select;
       When AtSignPos=0;
         // Invalid email address, no @
         return MyNull;

This just succeeded in generating a MCH3601.

I suppose I could write a pure SQL function that called this function and 
then CASEd a dummy return variable to null, but I've been beaten into 
submission.
