Do you really need 5000?
     D DispItems       DS                  Qualified
RNF0501E Length of character item DISPITEMS exceeds 65535; length defaults 
to 65535.
     D  DispItemsFld                       Dim(5000) like(Dummy)

And sorta does tend to leave the zeros, lodates, etc at the beginning of 
the array.

Any chance of changing sorta to only sort the first x elements?  Like:
setll *loval myfile;
dou %eof(myfile);
  read myfile tempds;
  select;
  When %eof(myfile);
    Leave;
  EndSl;
  x+=1;
  filefield(x)=tempds;
EndDo;
sorta fileds.myfield x;
