If i was processing a few to a few hundred records
I'd call another pgm to get value from another record
(and sounds like u may need this call in other places?

If you are processing lots of records & need performance
and don't have another logical to use.
You can also try this with just the 1 file:
key1 setll    file
key1 reade file
dow  not %eof(file)
process....
move fields from this record to print
save key fields to this record
build new key to chain
newkey chain file
move fields from this record to print
calc & print
savekey setll   file
savekey reade file - you are back in position
key1 reade file - read next record
enddo
jim
