I have found it best to move slowly.  Try a technique or two, and once you
have it down, make it part of your 'standard coding principles'.  Add a
couple at a time, and before long, your code will look 'sexy'.  

Also, I would also suggest after you get the basics down, and start taking
advantages of RPGIV's capabilities, sign up for the next RPGWorld.  I have
attended two of them, and I have learned more from these seminars than all
of the books I have read put together.
