I have an existing ILE procedure that returns true or false shown below

D #pgmAuth        PI              n

Can I call this from a CLLE like so?

CALLPRC    PRC(#PGMAUTH) PARM(&USER &PGM)
             RTNVAL(&AUTH) 

I am having trouble getting a correct RTNVAL.
Is this possible or am I dreaming?
I have tried declaring &AUTH as LGL and as CHAR, neither give the desired 
result.
