how to use Scan in free format?

Ok,
Figured I'd start writing new apps in Free format now, or at least some of 
the smaller ones to get used to it.  How do I do the SCAN opcode in Free 
format?  Got a 30 char field, want to find first occurence of ' ' and take 
the portion of that field from beginning to ' ' and use it, then scan from 
that onwards, etc.  Parsing a field.  Thanks,
