But would that work if the original field is binary or packed?
Personally, I still regard the %edit option as being a case of
"overthinking the plumbing" ("the easier it is to stop up the drain"),
unless one needs to handle negative values, and would stick with my own
solution of overlaying character and zoned fields in a data structure.
