I think the database will not be as good at handling the "B" data types. The database does not have true integer support, it has RPGIII-style "B" data types. Although, within RPG IV, you can use the EXTBININT keyword on the Header spec to automatically convert the database "B" data types to "I" data types in the program. Not sure if that helps or hinders overall performance, however. -----Original Message----- From: rpg400-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:rpg400-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Mark Adkins Sent: Friday, August 27, 2004 1:55 PM To: rpg400-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: Considerations of converting a database of packed and zoned numerics to integer types I am curious about the "real" impact of converting our entire database of numeric data types to integer-like types. I expect a noticeable performance benefit with the conversion of zoned to integer fields when they are part of the key simply because the keys will be much smaller to parse. Packed to integer key conversion shouldn't have much of an impact at all. I'm more interested in the areas of RPG like the MOVE command or any other commands that have special functionality. Any thoughts?
