Maybe a bit kludgy.  XLATE all the special characters to any one of the
special characters, and scan for that one character.

   pos = %scan('&' 
             : %xlate('&%*_?'
                    : '&&&&&'
                    : string));
   if  pos <> 0;
      then the string contains one of the characters

or if you don't need the position

   if 0 <> %scan('&' 
                 : %xlate('&%*_?'
                        : '&&&&&'
                        : string));
      then the string contains one of the characters
