Ron,

Do you think if enough of us tell IBM to get rid of "/free" directives, they
might eventually do it. 

I think this is one of the main stumbling blocks preventing further uptake
of free format.

The bleeding edge guys accept free-format and dive in, but the other guys
that are sitting on the fence look at all the ugly /free, /end-free in the
code, and just say no!

Interesting point you make there.  I make my opinions known here quite 
vocally, sometimes too much so.  I am not a "yes" man, I state the facts 
and that doesn't always earn brownie points until later down the road when 
I can say "I told you so".  We are currently using a mix and blend of 
RPGIII and RPGIV.  But every RPGIII program that is worked on gets 
converted over to RPGIV at the same time while in maintenance.  Offers a 
non-cost (or low cost) way of conversion because if a program needs to be 
worked on then it gets converted, if it's never worked on, then what's the 
point.  I'm trying to get everyone to go free format, but that won't 
happen I don't think until the /free is gone so the code "looks" nice.

The problem is that *you* know how your house is built.  If your company's
decision makers really understand how iSeries/OS400 is "built" and the 
value
proposition behind it, they won't make a bad decision.  Of course, if
they're sitting on a foundation built on RPG-III (or -II), what's the
likelihood that they know the capability of the iSeries?
