Hi Rob <snip> Wouldn't it be a better performer to just keep a variable that knows how many occurrences that you've wrote out? And just as reliable as a second array? </snip> The %OCCUR bif already does that by returning the number of occurrences of the data structure that have been written. The way I read the requirement was that Ron needed to find the first blank occurrence which could ultimately have been in the middle of the occurrences. Help. Wouldn't it be a better performer to just keep a variable that knows how many occurrences that you've wrote out? And just as reliable as a second array? Or here's a stretch. Ashcan the MODS and use an array instead. Like the following: ?* Affected Streets Data Structure Array d Ds d Sprop_Rec 136 dim(999) d Sspstat 1 Overlay(Sprop_Rec:*Next) d Sspstr# 4 0 Overlay(Sprop_Rec:*Next) d Ssploc 30 Overlay(Sprop_Rec:*Next) d Sspstak 4 0 Overlay(Sprop_Rec:*Next) d Ssploct 30 Overlay(Sprop_Rec:*Next) d Ssplds1 30 Overlay(Sprop_Rec:*Next) d Ssplds2 30 Overlay(Sprop_Rec:*Next) D X s 10i 0 /free Sspstat(1)='X'; Sspstat(2)='X'; Sspstat(3)='X'; x=%lookup(' ':Sspstat); dsply x; // I compiled and tested this. x was equal to 4 Rob Berendt -- Group Dekko Services, LLC Dept 01.073 PO Box 2000 Dock 108 6928N 400E Kendallville, IN 46755 http://www.dekko.com "Jonathan Mason" <jonathan.mason@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent by: rpg400-l-bounces@xxxxxxxxxxxx 11/02/2004 02:05 PM Please respond to RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries <rpg400-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx> To "RPG programming on the AS400 / iSeries" <rpg400-l@xxxxxxxxxxxx> cc Fax to Subject RE: MODS?? Help. Hi Ron Have you thought about creating a 999 element one character array that you initialise with blanks? Then, whenever you write an occurence out to the MODS, you put an "X" (or other non-blank character) into the appropriate element of the one character array. You can then %lookup for the first blank element, and the resulting index should be the first occurrenc in your MODS. Help. Ok, Tuesday feels like Monday now. Trying to find the first occurrence in a MODS that is not filled up? (Hope that makes sense) and then load it with my information. I tried using %LOOKUP on the first field name, but it's not an array so that's wrong. Here's my MODS: ?* Affected Streets Data Structure Array d Sprop_Rec Ds 136 Occurs(999) d Sspstat 1 Overlay(Sprop_Rec:*Next) d Sspstr# 4 0 Overlay(Sprop_Rec:*Next) d Ssploc 30 Overlay(Sprop_Rec:*Next) d Sspstak 4 0 Overlay(Sprop_Rec:*Next) d Ssploct 30 Overlay(Sprop_Rec:*Next) d Ssplds1 30 Overlay(Sprop_Rec:*Next) d Ssplds2 30 Overlay(Sprop_Rec:*Next) Now let's say there are a couple of occurences filled with info I want, how do I find the first blank occurrence? I know if it were an array field I could do Eval z = %LookUp(' ':MyArray:1) and that would give me the first blank index. Thanks, Ron Power Programmer Information Services City Of St. John's, NL P.O.
