You're missing the key on the READE:
read(e) key patmst patient;
It's not the READE op-code. The (E) at the end means that he wants to set on the %ERROR indicator rather than issue an escape message if something goes wrong.
He's actually coding the READ op-code, which does not have a key in factor 1.
