It's more obvious what's the code is doing. Also, if you have a keyed files that might contain null values, you don't necessarily get the first or last record with *LOVAL and *HIVAL. Bob is right. *START and *END have been there from the beginning for RPG IV, but if I recall correctly, they weren't documented in the first release(s?) of the manual.
