I wonder that too. I think I too was frustrated many moons ago by the lack of direct support for commands in RPG. Some commands just don't lend themselves well to being called from API's. Namely any one beginning with RTV. I guess I've been beaten into submission and have adopted the party line of replacing all that with other api's. For example, why should my rpg program call a custom cl program that does a RTVMSG when I should call the standard IBM api to get the same information. I just submitted an enhancement to the API finder at http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infocenter/iseries/v5r3/ic2924/info/apis/apifinder.htm to allow you to search by CL command. For example a search by RTVMSG should show you: "Retrieve Message (QMHRTVM) retrieves the message text and other elements of a predefined message stored in a message file on your system. This API is similar to the Retrieve Message (RTVMSG) command." You can get really close to this capability by the general search bar of infocenter typing in "api rtvmsg" without the quotes. The first time you try to use the QMHRTVM might be a little work, but after you prototype it and stuff it's just another tool in your toolkit.
