I have come across a gotcha in embedded SQL that may be in play here.  
It may have been addressed in a later version, but the thing is that the 
PREPARE and the EXECUTE and FETCH and all those other SQL statements can 
give you indigestion if you try to run them in any order that differs 
from the sequencing in the code.

Don't remember exactly what it was, but maybe this will help?
