Just a thought. Do have the relative record number of the record you require? Or could you arrange to store it from a previous process? If you known the RRN you can CHAIN straight to the record required without using any indexes. I have to say you don't do this kind of thing very often though - you'd need quite a good reason not to create a logical file...
