I agree with Charles. We used to use this technique with no problems. Then a release came out quite some time ago that caused much grief by enforcing the 1-for-1 field matching between the select * and the host data structure. Basically, if you use select *, and the file changes then you need to recompile the program. Related is of course the use of customer_ds as an externally defined DS. Both of which throw away one of the benefits of SQL; being able to change the file layout without requiring programs to be touched.
