Alan,

Why not create procedures instead of functions for the OPENIFS, CLOSEIFS, &
WRITEIFS headers?.  Then you could use:

CALL OPENIFSFORNEW('/home/yourdirectory/transmit.txt')
CALL WRITEIFSHEADER('File info')
CALL WRITEIFSHEADER('field header record')
...dummy update statement here to convert the detail data
CALL CLOSEIFS()
