Alan,

As you personally attest, now that you have imbedded SQL you use it 
because it's easier.  There's still a lot of chest pounders that feel all 
programmers would be better if they started out coding assembler.

The precompiler got a LOT better in V5R3.  But prior to that, you were 
right - it seemed a shame to be paying for ST1 when they put zero dollars 
into development of it.  I've been in some good discussions with IBM and I 
am convinced that V5R3 was not the end of the line for enhancements to the 
precompiler and we will never return to the dark ages.
