We do this.  Couldn't tell you how, as I don't write interactive RPG
(I only write batch stuff for the web), but I know it's ugly.  We have
a tube tied up at all times that this allocates.  Get rid of the
display file if it is at all possible.  Even if it's a bit of work,
you'll be glad you did in the long run.
