I curse them with you.   Record formats are the worse.  I have always
hated the deviousness of reading to record formats.  Why not use the
file name, it is clearer which file is being used.  Also I did see one
programmer rename the record formats to a clear name indicating the key
sequence, like bycustomerid or byitemid.  That was the only improvement
that I could see to reading record formats.

I can't remember the last time I used a record format for a chain or
read (15 years, if EVER!) and I've always cursed anyone who did.
