        its working as expected....

        the reason field DS is showing garbage is 
because field PACKED is a packed field (ie it is
compressed).

If you do debug field PACKED after moving FLD1
into it, it will show the correct value.

If you want to have it in legible format for field
DS, then define PACKED as a signed field (like NUM).

The number of bytes allocated for field PACKED in 
datastructure DS is (length + 1)/2 ie 6 bytes - not
11 bytes.
