Greg,

Do you know how much of the I/O occuring in the procedure is from the value
in file1 or the default value in another file.  Is the majority of the I/O
for the default values (my suspicion)?  How many default values are there?
Could you 'preload' the default values into a table to avoid repeated I/O to
the default value file?
